Haji Wright stole the spotlight as the United States rallied to a 2-1 victory over Australia in a heated international friendly in Denver Tuesday night. Australia struck first through a sensational volley from Jordan Bos, sending fans into raptures. However, the US clawed back into the game, with Wright equalising before halftime and later delivering the decisive goal in the second half, ending the Socceroos' unbeaten run under Tony Popovic.

Tempers flared throughout the contest, with several heated exchanges between players as both sides battled fiercely for control. Despite Bos’ stunning opener, it was Wright’s clinical finishing and composure under pressure that secured a dramatic comeback win for the Americans.

Bos handed Australia the lead in the 19th minute with a brilliant left-footed volley, turning a simple run of play into a moment of brilliance. The 22-year-old followed up his own throw-in, charged into the box, and met the loose ball with a powerful strike to notch his second international goal which left the US defense stunned.

Wright brought the US back on level terms in the 33rd minute with a sharp toe-poke at the near post, finishing off a precise through-ball from Cristian Roldan. However, the Americans were dealt a major setback soon after when captain Christian Pulisic limped off before the half-hour mark following a late challenge from Jason Geria.

The Australians were notably physical with Pulisic, as Geria picked up a yellow card for a heavy challenge just minutes before the AC Milan star was forced off injured. Tempers flared again on the stroke of halftime when Nicholas D’Agostino escaped punishment for a late follow-through on James Sands. The referee’s decision not to award a free kick infuriated the US players, sparking heated exchanges and minor scuffles across the pitch as tensions continued to rise.

The things got a little calmer in the second half as Australia came out firing, with Bos creating a golden opportunity for Connor Metcalfe, whose shot was crucially blocked. Moments later, the US struck back in style with Wright once again found space behind the Socceroos’ defense after a quick free kick and made them pay.

Cutting inside onto his left foot, Wright sent Cam Burgess sliding before curling a brilliant finish into the far corner past returning Australian captain Mat Ryan.

The goal sealed Australia’s first defeat in more than a year, ending their 11-match unbeaten streak under Popovic. The US, meanwhile, notched their 12th win under their Argentine coach Mauricio Pochettino.
