Worm Moon 2026: Date, Timings and how to watch the spectacular March Full Moon and Blood Moon Eclipse

Worm Moon 2026: Skywatchers around the world are preparing for a celestial double treat as the Worm Moon 2026, also known as the March Full Moon, will illuminate the night sky on March 3, 2026. This year’s Full Moon is particularly special as it coincides with a total lunar eclipse, popularly referred to as a “Blood Moon”.

Astronomers say the March Full Moon will reach peak illumination at 11:38 UTC on Tuesday, March 3, 2026. In the United States, this corresponds to 6:38 AM EST, 5:38 AM CST, 4:38 AM MST and 3:38 AM PST, as per a report by Starwalk.

When to See the Worm Moon 2026

Although the peak moment occurs in the early hours of March 3 in North America, experts advise that the best time to observe the Worm Moon 2026 will be during moonrise on the evening of March 2 (local time).

At moonrise, shortly after sunset, the Moon will appear larger and more golden near the horizon, an effect caused by atmospheric scattering, making it ideal for photography. The Moon will also appear full for about three nights, from March 2 to March 4.

On the day of the March Full Moon, the Moon typically rises around sunset and sets around sunrise, offering an entire night of bright lunar viewing.

A Rare Coincidence: Total Lunar Eclipse

What makes the March Full Moon 2026 especially noteworthy is its alignment with a total lunar eclipse on March 2–3. During the period of totality, the Moon is expected to take on a reddish hue, earning the name “Blood Moon”.

The eclipse will be best visible from western North America, the Pacific region, eastern Asia, Australia and New Zealand. In other parts of the world, only partial phases may be visible, while some regions, including parts of Europe and Africa, may not witness the eclipse at all.

The exact calendar date of the eclipse may vary slightly depending on time zone.

Where Will the March Full Moon Be in the Sky?

From an astronomical standpoint, the March Full Moon 2026 will appear in the constellation Leo, near the bright star Regulus, often called the “Little King”.

Astrologically, however, the Full Moon is often referred to as occurring in Virgo, a difference that arises because zodiac signs do not precisely align with modern constellation boundaries.

Why Is It Called the Worm Moon?

The name “Worm Moon” originates from traditional Native American and European naming systems. It refers to the time of year when earthworms begin to emerge as soil warms after winter, signalling the approach of spring.

Different cultures have alternative names for the March Full Moon. Among them:

  • Moon of Winds (Celtic tradition)
  • Goose Moon (Cree)
  • Crow Comes Back Moon (Ojibwe)
  • Windy Moon (Cherokee)
In the Southern Hemisphere, seasonal names are often shifted by six months due to reversed seasons.

Spiritual and Cultural Significance

The Worm Moon 2026 is widely seen as a symbol of renewal and transition. In folk traditions, it represents thawing, growth and new beginnings after winter’s dormancy.

In 2026, the March Full Moon also coincides with Vasanta Purnima (Phalguna Purnima) in the Hindu calendar, associated with the celebration of Holi, the festival of colours.

Astrologers describe this year’s Worm Moon, combined with the eclipse, as a “turning point” moment, a time linked to endings, realisations and course corrections.

Best Viewing Tips

  • Best for photography: Moonrise on March 2 after sunset.
  • Best for brightness: Night of March 2–3 when the Moon remains fully illuminated.
  • Best for eclipse watchers: During the totality window of the lunar eclipse.
