Premature delivery is the leading cause of death for children under five, according to the World Health Organization. Nonetheless, the group claims that three-quarters of those deaths might have been averted using already available, low-cost remedies. Before proceeding with the preventative measures, it is important to remember that premature birth is not always preventable.

Numerous factors, such as premature labour beginning on its own or being induced for medical reasons, contribute to the premature birth of babies. Dr. Salome, a paediatrician at Life Carstenhof Hospital, believes that preterm births may be caused by external factors beyond the mother's control.

Dr. Lelaka recommends that all pregnant women enrol in prenatal classes and that those at high risk consult with their gynaecologists as early in the pregnancy as possible, if not before getting pregnant.
