Saudi Arabia shocked the world after defeating Argentina in their opening FIFA World Cup 2022 game. Lionel Messi and Argentina fans all over the world were left in disbelief as Saudi claimed a 2-1 victory against them. Following the victory, there were rumours about each player being promised a Rolls-Royce as a gift for defeating Argentina. However, a player from the Saudi national team has come forward and refuted the claims.

Dismissing the claims, Saleh Alshehri said during a presser that the team was playing to serve their country, and that was their biggest achievement. Saleh and Salem Al Dawsari were the two goal scorers for Saudi against the no.3 ranked Argentina. The team plays its second match against Poland on Saturday, November 26.

The team’s manager, Herve Renard, also said that the reports of the Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman promising a Rolls-Royce Phantom to the players were untrue. Renard said the team was dead serious about the World Cup and wouldn’t want to think of “getting something at the moment.”

It is to note that Saudi Arabia is one of the richest nations in the world, and the infamous oil income of some of the Saudis is often cited in place of opulence. Therefore, when the football team beat the Argentinian giants, rumours sparked that every player was awarded, some articles claimed were promised, a Rolls-Royce car, which is probably the best luxury car brand in the world.

For reference, a Rolls-Royce Phantom starts at £363,600 for the base model. This means that buying one for each player would cost somewhere around £9.5 million, virtually nothing for the Saudi Royal Family.
