While women's achievements in the film industry are becoming more relevant, the number of female winners still falls short of the number of awards won by their male counterparts at the Oscars. In today’s times, it is highly important to recognize the role of women in Hollywood.
Although the Best Actress category is exclusively for women, only three women have won the Best Director Oscar: Jane Champion for "The Power of the Dog" (2022), Chloe Zhao for "Nomadland" (2021), and Kathryn Bigelow for "The Hurt Locker" (2008). This emphasizes the importance of highlighting women's accomplishments in categories that encompass both sexes.
The first woman to win the Best Actress Oscar was Janet Gaynor in 1928, the first ceremony in the history of the Oscars. Gaynor was born in Philadelphia in 1906 and was the only woman awarded at the gala, which demonstrated the inequality that existed at that time in the awards. Despite this, the Oscars' significance has grown throughout its various editions.

The most recent woman to win the Best Actress award was Jessica Chastain in the 2022 edition for her role in "The Eyes of Tammy Faye." After being nominated for the same award for her performance in other films, Chastain managed to win the precious statuette and closed, for now, the chapter of women at the gala in Los Angeles, which will resume this Sunday.
Looking forward to the 2023 Oscars, the nominees for Best Actress are Cate Blanchett, Ana de Armas, Andrea Riseborough, Michelle Williams, and Michelle Yeoh. As the film industry continues to evolve, we can hope to see more women recognized for their outstanding contributions in the future. While there is still progress to be made, women's contributions to the Oscars and the film industry at large are essential and deserving of recognition.
