Susan Crawford, supported by Democrats, won a seat on the Wisconsin Supreme Court. She defeated Brad Schimel, who had backing from Republicans, including Donald Trump and Elon Musk. Her victory ensures that the court will have a liberal majority for the next three years.

Crawford Declares Victory

Crawford celebrated her win surrounded by four liberal justices of the Wisconsin Supreme Court. She called her victory a win for democracy and spoke about the financial opposition she faced. Crawford noted that she never expected to challenge one of the wealthiest people in the world for justice in Wisconsin. She said that voters rejected attempts to influence the election with money.

Musk and groups he supported spent over $21 million against Crawford. Musk personally gave $1 million to two voters in Wisconsin before the election. Crawford said the election was about defending democracy and fair courts. She stated that justice should not be bought.

Highly Contested Election

Crawford defeated Schimel by more than eight points based on unofficial results. Voter turnout exceeded 52% of the voting-age population, setting a new record. Spending in the race was expected to surpass $100 million.

Schimel conceded defeat, but some of his supporters reacted with frustration. One woman accused Crawford of cheating. Schimel told his supporters to accept the results. At his election night event, he played bass with his rock band before and after conceding.

Race's National Implications

The Wisconsin Supreme Court plays a key role in election-related laws. Trump highlighted the importance of the race, saying Wisconsin is politically significant. Crawford received support from abortion rights advocates and criticized Schimel’s connections to Musk and Trump. Schimel's campaign focused on crime and redistricting concerns.

Some voters in Wisconsin responded to these messages. A retiree in Eau Claire supported Schimel due to concerns about redistricting. A disabled veteran who initially planned to abstain voted for Crawford after seeing Musk and Trump get involved.
