Before Vostok, the record for the coldest temperature ever recorded was at the Vostok Foreign Branch in 1968, with temperature dipping as low as -127 degrees Fahrenheit. However, these measurements are considered the coldest based on air temperature but by using satellite data a group of scientists actually measured an even colder temperature on the East Antarctic Plateau from 2004 to 2016. As per the study published in Geophysical Research Letters, scientists witnessed snow surface temperatures of below -130 degrees Fahrenheit, with the lowest reading of around -144 degrees Fahrenheit.
