St. Louis Cardinals first baseman Willson Contreras left Tuesday night’s game against the Colorado Rockies with a right foot contusion after being hit by a pitch in the fourth inning.

The 33-year-old took an 82.9 mph offering from Rockies starter Kyle Freeland off his foot, immediately slamming his bat to the ground in frustration before snapping it over his leg as he walked to first base.

Contreras remained in the game through the fifth inning but was replaced at first by Nolan Gorman to start the sixth.

The Cardinals later announced the injury as a bruise, indicating no structural damage, though Contreras could sit out Wednesday’s series finale as a precaution.

The veteran slugger has been hit by a National League-high 18 pitches this season, trailing only Randy Arozarena and Ty France for the MLB lead. He remains a key offensive force for St. Louis, leading the team with 16 home runs and 65 RBIs.
