Biden had earlier said that the U.S. would stick to its 1979 'One China' policy of recognizing Taiwan as a part of China. He added that the U.S. does not encourage Taiwan to seek independence and that Taiwan is free to make its judgments.
A White House official later clarified after the interview that Washington's official policy on Taiwan remains unchanged. U.S. continues to maintain 'strategic ambiguity on whether U.S. troops will be sent to defend Taiwan in case of invasion. However, the U.S. is obliged under the Taiwan Relations Act to facilitate Taiwan to defend itself.
Under the same act, the U.S. State Department announced the sale of military equipment to Taiwan worth $1.1 billion earlier this month. Vedant Patel, the spokesperson at the State Department, informed in a press briefing on September 6 that the package was in the pipeline since it was expected to be useful as China increased its pressure on the island's democracy.
He said that the U.S. would continue to be responsible, steady, and persistent while keeping China but also continue to support Taiwan in ways that are consistent with its policy.
