Will 'True Detective' star Matthew McConaughey try his luck on the political stage and throw his hat into the ringS? Attending the National Governors Association 2024 summer meeting in Salt Lake City, Utah, the actor said that he might run for political office, reports AP. Talking to New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy, a Democrat who asked about his plans, Matthew McConaughey said that he was on a learning tour and had been for probably the last six years. The “A Time to Kill” star asked if he had the instincts and intellect fit for politics.

McConaughey participated in a panel discussion with Utah Governor Spencer Cox, a Republican, and Colorado Governor Jared Polis, a Democrat, on how to promote civility in politics. Earlier in 2022, the actor hinted at running for governor in his home state of Texas. In the meantime, he has been vocal on the issues of gun control and asked Congress to pass legislation to bolster background checks for gun purchases and raise the minimum age to purchase an AR-15-style rifle to 21 from 18. He came out in favor of gun control after that year's school massacre in Uvalde, Texas.

Talking about the actors and directors weighing in on politics, the “Dazed and Confused,” star said that the film industry should watch its tongue out of the gate because it’s coming from the left. He added that the actors have to open a conversation with opening statements and not invalidate a moderate or conservative at the gate.


It is interesting to note that Hawaii Governor Josh Green, a Democrat, encouraged McConaughey to join politics and run for office. Offering him advice he told the actor that many Republicans will want him to be Republican and several Democrats will want him to be a Democrat, but he should be what he is so that he might be something special for all parties.
