Will Top Gear be renewed? Host Jeremy Clarkson reveals future plans for the show

Top Gear, which Clarkson started hosting in 2002 alongside co-presenters Richard Hammond and later James May, grew into one of the BBC's most successful and internationally renowned programs.

Jeremy Clarkson, the long-time host of Top Gear and The Grand Tour, has reflected on the shifting media landscape, stating that shows like Top Gear wouldn’t get commissioned in today's world.

According to Clarkson, the concept of three middle-aged, middle-class men driving cars around various countries would likely be rejected by modern producers. "It wouldn’t get commissioned now in a million years," Clarkson remarked. "Monkey tennis would be more likely to be commissioned than this”, as quoted in a report by Radio Times.

Clarkson’s comments come as the final episode of The Grand Tour, titled One For The Road, premiered on Prime Video, marking an end to an era of collaboration between Clarkson, James May, and Richard Hammond.

Top Gear and The Grand Tour history

Top Gear, which Clarkson began hosting in 2002, alongside co-presenters Richard Hammond and later James May, became one of the BBC's most successful and globally recognized shows. Its unique mix of car reviews, challenges, and banter between the three presenters resonated with audiences worldwide.

However, the format of three middle-aged men taking on automotive adventures across the globe, which seemed natural at the time, may not align with the evolving preferences of today's television landscape.

Clarkson expressed gratitude that Top Gear had "grown out of something else" before evolving into the cultural phenomenon it became. “I started in 2002, doing originally just with Hammond, and then May came along in the second season of the series,” he explained, reflecting on the show's journey. This format helped solidify the trio's chemistry, which translated well to their later collaboration on The Grand Tour.

The Final Farewell in The Grand Tour

The Grand Tour was launched as a spiritual successor to Top Gear when the trio moved to Amazon Prime Video after Clarkson's controversial exit from the BBC. The show carried forward the same adventurous spirit and camaraderie but with larger, more expansive road trips.

In the final episode, One For The Road, Clarkson, Hammond, and May embark on a road trip through Zimbabwe. The journey through beautiful yet challenging landscapes marks the end of a 22-year run of working together, leading to an emotional finale.

As Clarkson explained, the episode is a nod to their earlier adventures. “The premise of the original Botswana film was: why, when you leave London and move to Surrey, do you always buy yourself a 4x4? You don’t need one. To prove this, we decided to drive three perfectly ordinary cars across Botswana."

What’s Next for The Grand Tour?

Richard Hammond hinted that the series could continue with new presenters, although no concrete details have emerged. The trio’s departure marks the close of an era, but the concept of The Grand Tour may live on in a reimagined format.
