Tom Cruise is pulling out all the stops for his next film Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning. After death-defying stunts and an exciting trailer, the Top Gun star is now eyeing another way to make his movie memorable- the Cannes Film Festival.

While no details have been confirmed, it is rumoured that Tom Cruise may showcase the latest instalment of the Mission: Impossible franchise at Cannes. Variety reported that since the movie is releasing in the second week of the film festival, there are chances that Paramount could screen it at the prestigious film festival.

Top Gun: Maverick was screened at the 75th Festival de Cannes in 2022. The film, backed by Paramount, received much love and appreciation from critics.


Top Gun: Maverick grossed $1.45 billion at the global box office. It also bagged Oscar nominations in six categories, walking away with the award for best sound.

Cruise may be looking to repeat history with his Mission: Impossible franchise at Cannes. The film is supposed to be his final appearance as the spy Ethan Hunt. Before the release of Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning, the actor had earlier stated that he wanted to keep playing Ethan Hunt till he was in his 80s, The Hollywood Reporter stated.

Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning Plot

This time, Ethan Hunt is on a quest to save the world from a rogue Artificial Intelligence (AI) model known as The Entity. The spy and his team are on the hunt for the source code of the AI, which could help them manipulate its capabilities.

A teaser of the film was released during the Super Bowl LIX commercials and sees Tom Cruise hanging off the side of a biplane. The promo ends with the agent asking someone to trust him “one last time”.

Apart from rumours about Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, some high-profile movies are set to premiere at Cannes including Wes Anderson’s The Phoenician Scheme and Spike Lee’s Highest 2 Lowest. Richard Linklater’s Nouvelle Vague and Jim Jarmusch‘s Father Mother Sister Brother will also feature at the fest.
