After Denmark’s Queen Margrethe II announced to abdicate the throne in favor of her son Crown Prince Frederik, another royal may follow in her footsteps. UK's King Charles could be giving up the throne early in favor of his eldest son Prince William. Royal expert and biographer Phil Dampier has revealed that King Charles may think to make a similar move while William and his wife, Kate Middleton, are still young. Talking to the Daily Mail Dampier said, "It must make you wonder if, in five or ten years, King Charles might think about doing the same if his health suffers or he just thinks it is a good time to pass on to William and Kate while they are still young."

Reason behind Queen Margrethe’s decision

He said that the late Queen would never abdicate because of what happened in 1936 when her uncle abdicated and her father came to the throne, but times have changed.

Echoing Dampier's comment, another royal expert and commentator Richard Fitzwilliams said that Queen Margrethe’s decision to abdicate early could be to ensure that the monarchy kept up with the times. He further added that Charles has expressed interest in implementing in his own Firm. Fitzwilliams said further that Margrethe may have "calculated that an aging monarchy was not a good idea, especially if she had reigned for another decade or so."

While some political commentators think that Margrethe’s decision to abdicate early was to make way for a younger ruler, others believe that the announcement was a way to preserve the prince’s relationship with his wife, Crown Princess Mary.

It has been rumored that her son Prince Frederick Frederik is unfaithful to the Australian-born marketing consultant with socialite Genoveva Casanova. The speculation surfaced after photos emerged of them together during a trip to Madrid in November. However, the Mexican native has denied any affair.
