The pro-Trump House Freedom Caucus refuses to back House GOP leader Kevin McCarthy's quest for speaker. They have started to outline their list of demands, potentially jeopardising the California Republican Party's ability to secure 218 votes if the party wins the House with a narrow majority.

Kevin McCarthy's Candidature for Speaker

McCarthy remains the front-runner for the position, and no significant challenger has emerged.
Reps. Jim Jordan and Steve Scalise have backed their bids for the speakership.
The previous president of the United States, Donald Trump, endorsed Kevin McCarthy on Monday.

McCarthy and his team are confident that he will receive the necessary support to become a speaker.
However, the possibility of a slim House GOP majority has empowered the conservative hardliners, who are threatening to withdraw their support.

The Journey Ahead for Kevin McCarthy

This week, hundreds of hardline members of the Freedom Caucus met in Washington, DC, for their new member orientation.
They planned their approach to the speaker's race in the meeting.

The hardliners see an opportunity in their smaller-than-expected majority and intend to use their clout to increase their influence in a GOP-controlled House.

McCarthy still has time to convert his detractors.

Next week is the deadline for the GOP's internal leadership elections, in which McCarthy needs a simple majority to secure his party's candidacy for speaker.
