Republican Mike Lawler pretty strongly defended House Speaker Mike Johnson ahead of the recent speakership vote while arguing that Republicans considering voting against him are literally ‘playing with fire’, reported USA Today. Mike Lawler actually criticized the previous removal of Kevin McCarthy by eight Republicans which was being led by Matt Gaetz while calling it ‘the single stupidest thing’ in politics.

According to USA Today, Mike Lawler warned that removing Mike Johnson would be equally unwise and could potentially delay the certification of US President- elect Donald Trump's 2024 US Presidential election victory on January 6. Additionally, he emphasized on the importance of maintaining speaker stability after the previous leadership chaos that froze the House for nearly weeks.

Thomas Massie who is a hardline conservative actually announced that he would not support Mike Johnson while arguing that a ‘weak legislative branch’ cannot really achieve the mandate given to US President- elect Donald Trump and Congress, asserted USA Today. The upcoming vote is actually pretty critical with Mike Johnson needing near unanimous support from the narrow Republican majority, noted USA Today.
