Google intends to shut down its cloud gaming service Stadia in January in 2023, a little over three years after it started, citing low user demand. Stadia's vice president and general manager, Phil Harrison, stated that the company did not get the momentum with users they expected. He said Google intends to refund consumers for hardware purchases of Stadia made through the Google Store and game and add-on content sales made through the Stadia store.

Google Stadia was launched in 2019, making it one of several digital behemoths to participate in the gaming sector. Stadia, called "Netflix of video games" by some, let players broadcast and play games via cellphones, web browsers, and other devices using Chromecast's streaming device. It provided a console-quality experience without bulky hardware.

However, there were prior indications that Stadia was failing. Google said in 2021 that it will discontinue developing video games for its Stadia platform. Other technology businesses have also had to reconsider their gaming tactics. Last month Facebook said that it would discontinue its standalone Gaming App this fall.


The move also comes as Google and other big businesses reassess recruiting and investments in the face of a market slump and worries of a worldwide recession.
Despite the service's demise, Harrison stated that Google remains highly dedicated to gaming. According to Harrison, Google plans to apply some of the technology underlying Stadia in other products. The majority of reimbursements should be finished by mid-January 2023.
