After Iran attacked Israel, Republicans and their presidential hopeful Donald Trump were caught in a bizarre situation. Will the former President press to increase the financial and arms aid to Ukraine at a time when Washington will have to support Israel in its fight against Tehran knowing it well that the US has already stretched itself much much? The Iranian attack came just before US House Speaker Mike Johnson's announcement to advance war-time aid to Israel this week. He did not clarify whether Ukraine funding would be part of the package.

What will Republicans do now?

Earlier, Johnson, a close confidante of Trump, blocked an earlier $95 billion in aid sought by President Joe Biden for Israel, Ukraine and Taiwan which had passed the Senate. Johnson told 'Fox News', "The House Republicans and the Republican Party understand the necessity of standing with Israel. We're going to try again this week, and the details of that package are being put together right now."

Will Ukraine aid be restructured?

Trump and far-right lawmakers in the House of Representatives have grown skeptical of pouring billions of dollars into Kyiv's fight against Russia's invading forces. However, after meeting Donald Trump, the house speaker said that he was considering structuring the aid to Ukraine as a loan, as Trump has suggested.

The mood of the Republicans can be gauged by the statement of Sen. JD Vance (R-Ohio) who participated in CNN's program 'State of the Union'. He said, "We’re stretched way too thin, [with] the number of weapon systems that we need, Ukraine needs, that Taiwan needs, that Israel needs. And we can’t do all of these things at once."
