Why did Trump miss out on the Nobel Prize?
Donald Trump’s long-standing ambition to join the ranks of U.S. presidents who have won the Nobel Peace Prize was dashed this week when the award went to Venezuela’s Maria Corina Machado. The Norwegian Nobel Committee recognized her “tireless work promoting democratic rights for the people of Venezuela and for her struggle to achieve a just and peaceful transition from dictatorship to democracy,” as per a report by Newsweek.
The announcement immediately triggered a wave of backlash from MAGA supporters. Many had speculated Trump could clinch the honor following reports that Israel and Hamas agreed to the first phase of his proposed Middle East peace planas per a report by Newsweek.
Only four U.S. presidents, most recently Barack Obama in 2009, have received the award. Trump and his allies had publicly campaigned for the recognition, arguing that his foreign policy achievements, including efforts toward peace in Gaza, made him deserving of the honoras per a report by Newsweek.
How did MAGA supporters react online?
Prominent MAGA figures wasted no time venting their frustration on social media. One popular account, MAGA Voice with over 1.3 million followers, posted, “Some random person that nobody knows, Maria Machado, just won the Nobel Peace Prize THE NOBEL PEACE PRIZE IS A JOKE. Anyone with a brain knows Donald Trump should have won TRUMP COULD HAVE CURED CANCER SUCH A JOKE."
Another right-wing user, Raylan Givens, wrote, “The idiots from the Nobel Prize committee didn't give the Nobel Peace Prize to President Trump. What a disgrace and total BS.”
Political activist Laura Loomer called Machado’s win “affirmative action nonsense,” adding, "What an absolute joke. Everyone knows President Trump deserves the Nobel Peace Prize.”
Other supporters accused the Nobel Committee of losing credibility. One user declared the decision “a slap in the face,” while entrepreneur Mario Nawfal suggested Trump may have missed the cut because “the deadline for nominations was in January, just as his second term began.”
Could timing have cost Trump the prize?
Indeed, timing appears to have played a key role. The deadline for nominations was January 31, only days after Trump’s second presidential inauguration. Many of the governments and political figures reportedly planning to nominate him likely missed the cutoff.
Speaking to Newsweek, Scott Lucas, professor of international politics at University College Dublin, said Trump’s loss was “not a surprise because the nominations closed back in the start of January when Trump had only been in office for 11 days,” as per a report by Newsweek.
Lucas added that the Nobel Committee had already wrapped up deliberations “before the ceasefire in Gaza,” suggesting the timing made Trump’s consideration unlikely. He also noted that it would be awkward for the Trump administration to criticize Machado’s selection, given that she’s “a key member of the Venezuelan opposition and supposedly, the Trump administration is very keen on supporting the Venezuelan opposition.”
President Donald Trump has not publicly commented on the outcome. The White House also declined to respond when reached by email for comment outside normal business hours, as per a report by Newsweek.
