Wildfire in Arizona spreads rapidly toward Flagstaff, hundreds leave homes

After destroying several structures, a fast-moving wildfire in Arizona has forced hundreds to be evacuated. The fire continues to spread rapidly toward Flagstaff due to high winds.

The wildfire in Arizona has burned more than nine square miles with zero containment, 14 miles northeast of Flagstaff. The area was popular with off-road vehicle users, and NASA astronauts who trained there amid volcanic cinder pits.

Currently, the cause of the fire outbreak, which started shortly before 4:30 p.m. Sunday, is being investigated.

An immediate response by aviation resources was requested and deployed earlier in the day, but they remained grounded due to unprecedented winds in the area. Flame heights reached up to a hundred feet, and wind gusts reached 50 miles per hour.


What is the Forecast for the Fire in Flagstaff?

There was no optimal forecast for Wednesday. However, wind gusts were expected to reach 30 miles per hour.

A fire weather watch is in effect over the area for Thursday.

Amidst the growing fire, the rest of the days in the week are expected to be challenging.

What is the current condition of the wildfire in Arizona?

According to an official release from the Coconino National forest, due to high winds, the fire has grown substantially and is spreading rapidly towards the northeast.

The county requested state and federal resources to fight the fast-moving wildfire in Arizona. Currently, about 200 crew members are battling the blaze.

In response to the fire, County officials declared a local emergency. Residents were urged to monitor the fire's development on the county's website.

What is the current evacuation status?

Law enforcement officers evacuated people from their homes with the help of deputies.

At the time of the evacuation, more than 2000 people lived in Coconino County.

As of late Tuesday, 766 households have been evacuated.

In addition to 150 businesses, the fire in Flagstaff threatens local power and gas distribution networks and several sites of historical and cultural importance.

About 250 structures remain vulnerable.
