Elaine Silverberg, a widow from New Jersey has received the biggest surprise of her life, courtesy of some good samaritans. Silverberg, who lost her husband in 1988, was turned down by JPMorgan in a tough fight over her claim on late partner's $53,000 pension. Now, she has unexpectedly received a full payment of that amount. The money came from two strangers who were moved by her situation, as per a report.

The widow's struggle to get the pension

Elaine Silverberg, 73, has spent 13 years of her life fighting to get the money from the country's largest bank, which refused to pay out the pension due to a clerical mistake made by her late husband, as reported by The Post.

Silverberg's situation caught the attention of two insurance executives living in North Carolina, over 600 miles away from her town in Teaneck.

Strangers helped the widow

Roy Messer, a health insurance broker from Charlotte, and his business partner Bill Rice, were shocked by the bank's refusal to help. Hence, they decided to do the needful themselves..

Rice was shocked that for such a large sum of money, the bank would ignore the widow's plea. He believed there the woman's husband would have undoubtedly wanted the money to go to her and their children.

Rice speculated that for Jamie Dimon, chairman and CEO of JPMorgan Chase, this situation might be as insignificant as a nickel falling out of his pocket. He hoped that Dimon simply wasn't aware of what had happened.

Messer, 57, served in the Marine Corps between 1986 and 1989. He said he was moved by Silverberg’s story and felt that sending her the money was the right thing to do.

He explained that although he didn’t know her and could have easily ignored the situation, something about it caught his attention. He thought, "What if that was my mother?" he told The Post.

Silverberg's reaction to the situation

Silverberg was amazed by the kind gesture, saying that it "restored my faith in mankind".

She added that in such a crazy world, it was remarkable to experience such kindness. The widow expressed being "flabbergasted" by their extreme generosity, as she told The Post.

JPMorgan's comment

JPMorgan did not give a response yet, but a senior employee at the bank said that the pension rules don't allow for any exceptions.

The bank would never change its mind after staff refused to give Silverberg her husband Mel’s $331-a-month pension, despite her repeated requests, according to the Post.

Silverberg said the total amount of money is worth about $53,000.

JPMorgan accountants claimed that Mel, a former system analyst with Chase Manhattan Bank, did not complete the required forms before he suddenly passed away at 43 in 1988. Chase Manhattan merged with JPMorgan in 2000.
