On January 10, 2024, Disney+ is set to launch "Echo" under the newly introduced Marvel Spotlight banner, accompanied by a fresh intro logo scored by Oscar-winning composer Michael Giacchino. This new sub-category within Marvel serves as a platform for standalone content, distinct from series and movies that tie into the broader Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The Marvel Spotlight name draws inspiration from an anthology comic book series first introduced by Marvel in 1971. This series featured new characters, allowing readers to engage without the need for a long-term commitment over multiple issues.

At a Friday-night screening of the initial two episodes at The District at Choctaw Casinos & Resorts in Durant, Okla., Marvel Studios’ Head of Streaming, Brad Winderbaum, explained, “Marvel Spotlight gives us a platform to bring more grounded, character-driven stories to the screen, and in the case of Echo, focusing on street-level stakes over larger MCU continuity.”

He further emphasized, “Just like comics fans didn’t need to read Avengers or Fantastic Four to enjoy a Ghost Rider Spotlight comic, our audience doesn’t need to have seen other Marvel series to understand what’s happening in Maya’s story.”

Interestingly, despite being placed under the Marvel Spotlight banner, "Echo" still ties into the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe. The series revolves around Maya Lopez, a Native American deaf assassin, who first appeared in Disney+'s "Hawkeye". Additionally, Vincent D’Onofrio’s antagonist character from the Disney/Netflix series "Daredevil" also featured in "Hawkeye" and continues his narrative in "Echo".

While various Disney+ series have interconnected with MCU movies, such as "WandaVision" influencing "Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness", and both "WandaVision" and "Ms. Marvel" leading into the upcoming film "The Marvels", it's noteworthy that the 2019 film "Captain Marvel" links to the Disney+ series "Secret Invasion" starring Samuel L. Jackson.
