St. Louis Cardinals first baseman Willson Contreras has been handed a six-game suspension by Major League Baseball (MLB) following his ejection during Monday’s contest against the Pittsburgh Pirates. The 33-year-old Venezuelan was also fined an undisclosed amount, though he has appealed the punishment, delaying its enforcement until the process is complete.

The incident unfolded in the bottom of the seventh inning of St. Louis’ 7-6 victory. Contreras struck out on a pitch he believed was low in the strike zone and expressed frustration as he walked away.

Plate umpire Derek Thomas promptly ejected him, prompting a heated confrontation. Contreras later insisted he had not argued excessively, claiming his only remark was that the pitch should be called consistently for both teams.

"I don't think he had a cause to throw me out. I didn't argue any pitch," Contreras said after the game. "In that last at bat, all I said was, 'Call that pitch for both sides 'cause you are missing for us.'"

The aftermath grew more intense. Cardinals assistant coaches restrained Contreras as he attempted to approach Thomas. In the commotion, assistant coach Brant Brown was accidentally struck by a bat thrown by Contreras. He also flung a container of gum out of the dugout in visible frustration. Crew chief Jordan Baker stated that Contreras made contact with an umpire, an allegation the player strongly denied.

Contreras, a three-time All-Star, has been a fiery presence throughout his career. He broke into the majors with the Chicago Cubs in 2016, making an immediate impact by helping the franchise capture its first World Series title in 108 years. He remained with the Cubs through 2022 before signing a five-year, $87.5 million contract with St. Louis.

While Contreras maintains that his actions did not warrant an ejection or suspension, MLB cited his behavior as unacceptable, leading to the significant penalty. With the appeal pending, the Cardinals will await clarity on when, or if, their starting first baseman will serve the suspension.
