Why trade unions have slammed Donald Trump?
At a time when many trade unions have endorsed Kamala Harris, Sean O’Brien, President of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters and many other unions have slammed Donald Trump for praising Tesla CEO Elon Musk in a live interview on social media platform X. This may further complicate the problems for the Republican candidate who has been trailing presumptive Democrat candidate in most of the opinion polls since she has joined the race. During the interview on X, Trump said, “They go on strike, I won’t mention the name of the company, but they go on strike and you say, ‘That’s OK, you’re all gone,'” Trump continued. “You’re all gone. So, every one of you is gone.”

UAW President slams Donald Trump, Elon Musk

In a statement issued on Tuesday, O’Brien said sacking workers for organizing, striking, and exercising their rights as US citizens is economic terrorism. Echoing the sentiments, UAW President Shawn Fain said in a statement both Trump and Musk want working-class people to sit down and shut up, and they laugh about it openly. He added it is disgusting, illegal, and predictable from these two "clowns".



Trade Unions endorse Kamala Harris

On the other hand, most trade unions have endorsed Kamala Harris. Some of those backing her include United Auto Workers, Service Employees International Union, United Food & Commercial Workers, UNITE, AFL-CIO, American Federation of Teachers, County and Municipal Employees, United Farm Workers, and International Union of Painters, Communications Workers of America, American Federation of State and Allied Trades.

The Democrat contender was also supported by the National Black Caucus of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters (or TNBC) as they voted unanimously to endorse her.

Tim Walz appeals to unions

Kamala Harris' running mate Harris’s running mate and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, who has been branded liberal by Donald Trump, has also appealed to the unions. In a rally for the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees in Los Angeles, Walz said he was the “first union member on a presidential ticket since Ronald Reagan.”

However, Donald Trump was a member of the Screen Actors Guild when he contested the presidential election in 2016 and 2020, before quitting it in 2021.
