Why Some Bosses Secretly Hate New Ideas and What It Does to Your Work Life
Ironically, in today’s world, employees are urged to think creatively and be innovative, but at the same time, their insecure managers won’t end up appreciating their creative thinking. Have you been facing this issue, too? If yes, you need to understand why it happens.

As Influence Journal for Leaders (2025) reported, this type of culture does not always look hostile at first, but eventually, it discourages workers by implying that rule-abiding is more appreciated than being curious.

Not just does this culture significantly influence workers’ behavior, but it also leads them to self-discard their thoughts even before presenting them to the group.

Why insecure leadership discourages creativity

According to psychological research, one of the most significant factors that influences the suppression of creative expressions in the workplace is the role of insecurity in leadership. If you have an insecure leader, chances are very high that they tend to take your creative ideas as a challenge to their authority and power. These people tend to value predictable outcomes over creative expressions in the workplace.

However, as discussed in the Springer (2025) publication, such leaders tend to use despotic leadership behaviors in the workplace. Despotic leadership behaviors are where the leader’s need for dominance is more important than the need for collaboration.

If you’re working in such an environment, you are unlikely to contribute your creative expressions.

This is because, when employees feel that their creativity is not welcomed, their intrinsic motivation starts to decrease, which in turn affects their engagement and performance.

According to a study published in Current Psychology (Springer, 2023), supervisory styles that are hostile or controlling can reduce the intrinsic motivation that stimulates creativity, thus encouraging employees to engage in mundane tasks rather than creative ones.

Psychological safety’s role

An important term that helps us understand this process is that of psychological safety, which is the feeling of security that an individual has when they believe they can share their ideas without the threat of embarrassment or punishment. In an environment with controlling leadership, this is not the case, leading to an environment of silence.

As the Springer study of 2025 has shown, the lack of psychological safety means that anxiety is increased, leading to self-monitoring, which has a negative effect on the overall creative output of the team. Employees may not even attempt to put forward their solution, even when they see an opportunity, as the risk is not worth the reward.

Not all workers react in the same way when they are in an environment that lacks psychological safety, as some attempt to regain some form of control by engaging in what is known as status-striving behaviors. The Springer study of 2025 has shown that, in some cases, workers may channel their frustration into creativity as a means of self-assertion.

Long-term impact on organizations

We need to understand that the organizations that allow such behavior to continue in their work environment are likely to suffer in the long run. The Influence Journal for Leaders (2025) states that for an organization that does not encourage innovation, it may lead to stagnation since the employees are no longer contributing to the growth of the organization.

Further research by Springer (2023) in Current Psychology suggests that such environments are also associated with higher turnover rates, as the creative employees seek environments that encourage creativity. This not only affects productivity but also leads to increased recruitment and training costs.

No matter how good your company is, how well they pay, if you’re not working in a healthy workspace, it all will go to waste. It’s important to have boundaries and take the right step at the right time. Are you all set?
