According to the literature on archaeology and environmental architecture, the underground structure is cool in hot climates and warm in cold climates. As a result, the climate inside remains constant, and one is less likely to be affected by the extremes found in the environment above.

Underground architecture is also present in places where there was a need for safety purposes. From studies carried out on historical structures such as Derinkuyu in Cappadocia, it becomes clear that such places were able to offer sanctuary from any threat that could emerge. This was possible through narrow tunnels, hidden entrances, and multiple layers of chambers.

It is clear from the design that there was some planning beyond the need for immediate survival. The ventilation ducts, water supply points, and social areas show that there was a lot of collaboration and sustained effort involved in creating these areas.
