Why Myles Garrett may have signed an extension with Cleveland Browns despite Super Bowl aims

Myles Garrett's request for a trade early this year was all about pursuing a Super Bowl, not finances--or so he claimed. Yet now, he has signed an all-time-record $204.7 million contract extension with the Cleveland Browns to become the NFL's high...

Myles Garrett publicly requested a trade from the Cleveland Browns earlier this year. Talking about the move, he had insisted his motivation was not financial. Yet, weeks later, Garrett reversed course and signed a four-year, $204.7 million extension.

This made him the league's highest-paid non-quarterback in NFL history. The contract averages $40 million annually and includes a whopping $123.5 million in guaranteed funds, far surpassing recent deals for other top defenders like Maxx Crosby and Nick Bosa.

Myles Garrett on new contract

According to a Times of India report, Garrett had publicly said that his motivation behind requesting a trade was all about football and not about money or another contract. He had reportedly said that he just wanted to play meaningful football.

Reportedly, his statements had even fuelled speculations that he wanted to join a Super Bowl contender.

What changed?

Despite Garrett’s public trade request, the Browns never seriously entertained offers for the defender. Multiple teams, including the Ravens, Dolphins and Eagles were interested. Cleveland made it clear they were unwilling to lose their star defender.

Reportedly, the franchise doubled down on their commitment to Garrett which led to contract negotiations. These negotiations were spearheaded by his agent Nicole Lynn.

The outcome was a record-breaking deal. It also included a no-trade clause that ensures Garrett remains with the Browns through 2030. For the Cleveland Browns, keeping their defensive cornerstone was a necessity. It was crucial not just for on-field performance but for leadership in the locker room and the community.

Super Bowl ambitions vs financial security

Garrett’s choice to remain in Cleveland, however, raised some eyebrows. If winning a Super Bowl was genuinely his main goal, his decision to remain with a side that has won only two seasons since 2008 does not fit in with his ambitions.

Although his new contract ensures financial stability, the Browns’ journey toward championship contention is still unclear.

Impact on the NFL market

According to a Sports Illustrated report, Garrett’s contract has set a new benchmark for defensive players. Earlier, Maxx Crosby had briefly held the title of the highest-paid non-quarterback with a $35.5 million annual deal.

However, with Garrett being signed with a $40 million deal, the new teams looking to extend contracts—like Micah Parsons of the Dallas Cowboys—are likely to feel the pressure to either match or exceed Garrett’s earnings.
