Though Kamala Harris has not yet been nominated as a Democratic candidate for the US Presidential Election 2024, she has started the process of finding a suitable running mate. Her campaign team sent vetting materials to North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper, Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer, Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, and Senator Mark Kelly, D-Ariz. But she must finish the entire selection process in about two weeks to comply with an August 7 deadline Democrats have set for themselves to finalize their ticket, reports NBC News.

Will Kamala Harris miss Ohio deadline?

If Kamala Harris fails to complete the process and announce the name within 15 days, she risks losing her spot on the ballot in Ohio. She will be left with only two weeks as the Democratic National Convention begins on August 19.

Earlier the Republicans in the Ohio state legislature refused to join hands on amending the August 7 deadline for parties to submit names of their nominees. Though it has been seamless to finalize the name of the nominees before the Ohio deadline, it is difficult this time because Joe Biden stepped aside and the nominee has not been finalized officially.

Are Ohio Republicans planning lawsuits?

Ohio’s top election official, Republican Secretary of State Frank LaRose has said this issue has been resolved and there is no threat to Democrats’ ballot access, as the local election officials have already been instructed to follow the new deadline. According to NBC News, conservative groups like the Heritage Foundation have been planning lawsuits to create hurdles for Democrats.

Participating in MSNBC’s 'Morning Joe' on Tuesday Democratic National Committee Chair Jaime Harrison said that everything must be wrapped up by August 7. He also said that the party will decide Vice President nominee by that date.
