Why is the Philippine mayor on the Run?
Alice Guo, the mayor of Bamban, the Philippines, is running from the law. An arrest order was issued against her as a result of her nonattendance at Senate hearings looking into offenses involving offshore gaming. Guo, 33, is charged with having ties to Chinese crime syndicates that run covert online casinos in her town, as per the reports of Yahoo news.

Controversy and investigation

Amidst the escalating tensions between Manila and Beijing about the South China Sea, the subject has garnered significant national attention. Guo says that she was too tired after her prior appearances and traumatized to attend the sessions. She claims she would handle any accusations in a suitable legal environment and has accused the Senate of character assassination.

Following the discovery of a fraud center during a search on a Philippine Offshore Gaming Operator (Pogo) facility in Bamban, an investigation into Guo was launched. In order to steal money from victims, the center was pressuring hundreds of people, including Chinese, Filipinos, and other foreigners, to participate in online fraud. Such fraud schemes are common in Southeast Asia, where scammers are frequently duped into becoming victims by false job postings.

Presidential action and property dispute

President Ferdinand Marcos of the Philippines banned online casinos on July 22 because of their misuse of the legal system. The Pogo used in the scam was located on property that Guo claimed to have sold before she was elected. Despite this, the investigation focused on her nationality and family history.

Guo's family history came under scrutiny when she provided contradictory testimony about it in previous Senate hearings. She struggled to give specifics about her childhood and acknowledged that her birth certificate was registered after the deadline. Guo identified herself as the "love child" of a Chinese father and a Filipina maid, claiming that her mother abandoned them when she was a baby and that her father raised her in Tarlac.
