Why Is the Flu hitting harder than Covid this winter in the US?

This winter season more cases of flu have taken over the United States of America with decreasing reports of Coronavirus. Here is an explanation of what has changed and why

Coronavirus arrived five years ago and since then there have been waves of illness in winters all over the country. However, with the hospitalization rates going down now, the usual reports of Covid cases have now decreased.

Instead of Coronavirus, familiar diseases like bird flu, pneumonia, RSV, norovirus, and Influenza are grabbing more attention than the novel virus this winter season as the hospitalization rate increases threefold.

It is during winters that airborne viruses spread easily when people travel, go to indoor gatherings, and gather in groups for holidays. However, it is important to note that COVID-19 is not seasonal, despite public health officials rolling out vaccinations and free test kits ahead of colder months.

According to a report by The Washington Post, weekly hospitalization rates per 100,000 people for flu exceeded Coronavirus this time, which is a surprising shift from last winter during the pandemic.

However, it should be noted that the metrics of collecting data have changed, with hospitals not testing every patient for Coronavirus, and official case tallies are also not available.

Wastewater is a carrier of the virus as people who don’t get tested or seek medical assistance may expel the virus while visiting the washroom. The change is unusual but apparent in hospitals as well.

According to a report by the CDC, 38 out of every 100,000 people were hospitalized due to Coronavirus as of January 11, less than half the rate as compared to the previous year’s data.

Covid also stays around in summer and spring. The covid wave of 2024 summers was worse compared to that of the previous year. That might be the reason why this winter witnessed a weaker covid season as told by Jennifer Nuzzo, Director of the Pandemic Center at the Brown University School of Public Health to the Washington Post.

The wastewater also shows that the USA has not experienced the usual COVID surge compared to winters in the previous years. This also implies that people who caught the virus in the summer were exposed to it again and were less likely to be infected by it this winter.

Now that everyone has developed some degree of immunity against the virus, it has to learn to fight antibodies that block it from infecting.

According to the Washington Post, Raynard Washington, who chairs Big Cities Health Coalition, had already cautioned against less spread of Coronavirus this winter. Though physically weaker people are still vulnerable, stressing on hospitals as they treat other diseases such as RSV, influenza, and norovirus, the bug that has witnessed a surge this winter, medical commentators have declared a ‘quad-demic’.

It has been advised by doctors to get a COVID-19 or flu vaccine if you haven’t already. Stay home when feeling unwell and practice thorough handwashing regularly to reduce the risk of contracting norovirus.
