Unilever-owned American Mayo brand, Hellmann's mayonnaise is being discontinued in the South African market over low demands and “highly inflationary import costs”. Starting Tuesday, January 31, the world-famous mayo is being pulled back from South African markets and will not be available in stores across the country. However, it would still be there in the United States.
Sharing the update about discontinuation in South Africa, Hellman’s said on Facebook that it was “hard” to bid farewell to the mayonnaise but keeping in consideration the import costs, the product will be discontinued. The statement said, “A big thanks to our loyal fans for all the mayo love over the years”.
However, the post caused a stir online with several netizens thinking it would be discontinued across borders. While the post was removed from its Facebook page of Hellman’s, it caused confusion as the company did not mention that the product would be pulled back only from South African markets.
