Why is Chernobyl famous? Revisiting the infamous nuclear accident site after alleged Russian drone strike

Chernobyl's radiation shelter has been allegedly hit by a Russian drone, according to claims made by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. Here's a brief history of why Chernobyl remains one of the most controversial places on Earth

Ukraine has claimed that Russia launched an overnight drone attack on the Chernobyl site, that has 'significantly' damaged the radiation shelter in place to protect any nuclear leaks. However, Russia has denied these claims and said that the statements made by Ukraine are 'far from reality'. And with this latest development, Chernobyl is back to being in the headlines as the most controversial locations on Earth.

Why is Chernobyl infamously popular?

Chernobyl was a nuclear power project that underwent a major accident back in 1986, when the Soviet Union was still in its heydays. It was reportedly a flawed Soviet Union reactor design that was operated with inadequately trained personnel, leading to the ghastly accident releasing at least 5 per cent of the radioactive reactor core into the environment and depositing radioactive materials across many parts of Europe.

2 plant workers at Chernobyl passed away during the accident back then, followed by the death of 28 more staffs in the coming days due to radiation exposure, marking one of the deadliest nuclear accidents in world history. The Soviet Union was widely criticized for this incident, with as many as 350,000 people evacuated as a result of the accident, according to a World Nuclear Association report.

Current status of Chernobyl

The recent 'drone strike' as claimed by Ukraine may have damaged the radiation shelter protecting the nuclear reactor of Chernobyl, but no elevated radiation levels have been observed yet, and no casualties have occurred as of now.
