Why has US Navy bombed and sank its own naval ship USS Tarawa in Pacific Ocean?
In what may be dubbed as a demonstration of its capability and a warning to China and its navy, the US has destroyed its own decommissioned amphibious assault ship USS Tarawa, in the Pacific Ocean. An Air Force B-2 stealth bomber dropped a bomb on the abandoned naval ship. The lead ship of her class, was an amphibious assault ship that served in the US Navy from 1976 to 2009, before it was decommissioned. She was the second ship to be named after the Battle of Tarawa, fought during World War II.

Reacting to the destruction of USS Tarawa, China- controlled Global Time wrote that it was an exercise "clearly aimed at China," as China was "the only country deemed as 'enemy' by the US that operates a 40,000-ton amphibious assault ship in the Asia-Pacific region."

Global Times: An outdated ship

In an article published in the government-run online news outlet, it was said that the USS Tarawa is an amphibious assault ship that served in the US from 1976 to 2009. It further said that such an outdated ship cannot be compared with modern military equipment.

US Navy sends strong signals to China

The US Navy demonstrated its capability and sent a strong signal to China and its People's Liberation Army after Beijing positioned its ships in areas of US allies such as the Philippines, Taiwan. It has also deployed its ships in areas south and north of the communist country.

Confirming the destruction of the ship, the US Navy said in a statement that it wan an answer to an urgent need to quickly neutralize maritime threats over massive expanses of ocean around the world at minimal costs.
