Why has Netflix cancelled Parasyte: The Grey after Season 1?

Netflix’s South Korean horror hit, Parasyte: The Grey, which debuted in early 2024, has become one of the platform’s most-watched series of the year.

Netflix’s South Korean horror sensation, Parasyte: The Grey, which premiered in early 2024, has made waves as one of the platform’s most-watched series of the year. Despite its popularity and the excitement surrounding its potential continuation, Netflix has officially designated the show as a “Limited Series,” thus confirming that there will be no second season.

This designation has left many fans disappointed, especially given the recent hints from director Yeon Sang-Ho about possible future developments.

Limited Series Classification

As per the latest Netflix Engagement Report, Parasyte: The Grey has been classified as a limited series, indicating that it will not return for additional seasons. This label, while occasionally revised in other contexts, is typically definitive for Korean dramas, which often do not see continuations but may result in spin-offs, as per a report by What’s On Netflix.

The series, which quickly climbed the ranks to become Netflix's 20th most-watched show of 2024, was particularly notable as the most-viewed South Korean drama of the year, surpassed only by Queen of Tears.

Performance and Popularity

The series made a strong impression globally, entering the top ten TV lists in 91 countries, including a notable second place in the United States. Within just four days of its launch, Parasyte: The Grey garnered 6.3 million views, placing it among the top K-dramas on Netflix. Despite this success, the decision to classify it as a limited series suggests that no further episodes will be produced.

Director’s Comments on a Possible Second Season

Yeon Sang-Ho, known for his work on Train to Busan and Hellbound, has previously hinted at the possibility of a second season. In recent comments, he provided insights into the ending of the series and hinted at the potential involvement of Izumi Shinichi, a key character from the original manga.

According to Sang-Ho, the ending of Parasyte: The Grey is set about eight years after the main events, and he had detailed plans for Shinichi's character during the filming, as mentioned in a report by What’s On Netflix.
