Why four-day weeks are becoming popular among US schools? Here’s all you need to know

The 4-day workweek is gaining popularity in many states, with the St. Joseph School District becoming the latest K–12 organization to explore implementing it.

The St. Joseph School District, located near Kansas City, Missouri, may become the next significant K–12 institution to reduce its workweek from five to four days.

This week, the St. Joseph School District, which educates over 10,000 children, said it will be investigating the prospects of a four-day school week. Officials anticipate that the cut, which would not take effect until the 2024–2025 school year, will help fill critical staffing gaps, notably in the ELL department.

The decision was made after the Independence School District board of trustees, a network of schools east of Kansas City, voted 6-1 earlier this month to adopt a four-day workweek. By adopting the compressed schedule, Independence became the biggest district in the state, with nearly 14,000 kids.

Not only this, but many other schools are also considering following the doing the same pattern. The Brookings Institute states that its appeal has increased over the past 20 years. At least 662 districts in 20 states had four-day workweeks.

The four-day workweek trend has increased due to the COVID-19 pandemic, especially as schools struggle with a lack of teachers and other personnel. Burnout costs are also a factor in the national shortage of teachers.

Ramifications of a four-day week

Four-day work weeks are convenient from a logistical perspective. They can also assist in reducing expenditures, particularly those related to building expenses and power.

However, shorter school weeks might cause parents stress due to childcare costs and transportation issues. Additionally, shorter weeks have implications for education as well. According to research, providing children with extra time for high-quality instruction is essential for helping them make up for learning interruptions during the COVID-19 era.
