Great white sharks are often thought of as the ocean's apex predators; however, recent studies indicate that this predator-prey relationship is not permanent, as killer whales can challenge great white sharks to claim this title. The 2025 database published by PubMed Central contains 320 images and videos related to 82 interactions between orcas and sharks recorded in 12 different countries. This indicates that such encounters are more common than a mere accident.

As per the study, orcas hunt several species of sharks; however, in these encounters, there were cases both where sharks hunted orcas and vice versa, making it easier for the researchers to distinguish which ones actually qualified as hunting activity. It has been found that although not all orcas hunt sharks, certain pods continue to prey on these predators.



Sharks respond before danger becomes visible

As noted by scientists, the presence of danger does not require any physical interaction for marine species to alter their behavioral patterns, as has been established in past studies about sperm whales, where killer whales' sounds were enough to cause changes in feeding and locomotion behaviors.
