Why Do Some Career Moves Make Sense Only in Hindsight
Careers can be talked about in terms of various aspects, such as trajectory and plans, based on a person’s circumstances. But when reflecting on one’s career path, there is a tendency for things to be a lot more haphazard than they first appeared. What might have been seen as a difficult choice when it was happening takes on a clearer meaning only afterward. An occupation that wasn’t quite right or an alternative career path that did not make any sense at all when it was being chosen.

The benefits of retrospection in relation to narrative identity have been studied in a Developmental Psychology article (2015). Humans naturally tend to create cohesive narratives out of their personal experience. It means that events will not be left unconnected; they will have meaning associated with them, and some sense of continuity will be created. It means creating a meaningful story despite the lack of initial intentions, within a career. Moreover, there is another side to experience that changes perspectives on the way life goes. A deviation may turn out to be valuable exposure to something, and skills that have been acquired somewhere can be transferred to another area. Some connections might not have mattered at first, but acquire importance later due to certain circumstances. The topic of career adaptability is considered in more detail in an article for the Journal of Vocational Behavior (2020), where researchers show how people become flexible within their career development. It should be noted that the value of experiences might not have been apparent from the start.

What strikes one here is not the certainty of the path taken, but the manner in which the route taken is perceived over time. One may perceive something as uncertain at the moment and make sense of it retrospectively. This need not imply that the career choice is preplanned; instead, it denotes the way perceptions change over time. The clarity that results in hindsight may be viewed in terms of perception rather than a structured approach to career management.
