Why did the Orioles-Rockies game continue after fans were evacuated?

Friday night’s game between the Baltimore Orioles and Colorado Rockies at Camden Yards took an unusual turn when fans were asked to evacuate open seating areas due to lightning in the area - yet the game continued on the field without interruption.

The decision to clear fans came around the start of the sixth inning as rain began to fall. Despite the evacuation, no delay was called, and players stayed on the field for about two innings while spectators sought shelter in covered sections with a view of the action.



The reason for the discrepancy lies in how such decisions are made: the Orioles are responsible for fan safety, while the umpiring crew determines whether the game should be paused.

Crew chief Bill Miller explained that although lightning was visible in the distance, the umpires did not believe it posed an immediate threat to players.

“We didn’t think at any time anybody on the field was in danger,” Miller said.


Miller also noted that he was receiving weather updates from the grounds crew every half-inning. While initial reports predicted a strong storm by 8:45pm, the outlook improved, and the storm ultimately shifted south, sparing the stadium from serious conditions.

Baltimore interim manager Tony Mansolino supported both decisions, praising the Orioles for prioritizing fan safety and trusting the umpires’ judgment on player welfare.

By the end of the seventh inning, fans were allowed to return to their original seats. The game was never delayed, and the Rockies eventually won 6-5.
