Williams had signed a $6 million, one-year deal in March to return to the Chargers, but was placed on the physically unable to perform list on Monday with an undisclosed injury. Two days later, he decided to walk away from the game.
Williams played eight NFL seasons, primarily with the Chargers, and had brief stints with the Jets and Steelers in 2024. Drafted seventh overall in 2017, he totaled 330 receptions, 5,104 yards, and 32 touchdowns.
Williams' career was often hampered by injuries, including a back issue in his rookie season, a back fracture in 2022, and an ACL tear in 2023.
Quarterback Justin Herbert and safety Derwin James praised Williams' leadership and impact, expressing disappointment but support for his decision. Herbert called him 'an excellent leader and teammate', noting how hard he was to replace.
Williams previously signed a three-year, $60 million extension after a breakout 2021 season, where he posted career highs in receptions, yards, and touchdowns.
With Williams gone, attention now turns to rookie receiver Tre Harris, who remains unsigned. Herbert and coach Jim Harbaugh expressed optimism about his return.
Meanwhile, the Chargers added offensive line depth by signing tackle Ryan Nelson from the UFL's Michigan Panthers. Nelson, a local product from Buena Park, brings pro experience and collegiate pedigree from Virginia.
