Why did Lloyd Howell quit as NFLPA executive director? Here's the real reason
Lloyd Howell resigned as Executive Director of the NFL Players Association, citing distractions from controversies. His tenure faced scrutiny over a conflict of interest with the Carlyle Group and a confidential agreement to suppress an arbitrator...

Howell, who took on the role two years ago, emphasized his belief in the union's mission and the power of collective action. However, his tenure came under growing scrutiny after a series of revelations, including an ESPN report that he had continued part-time consulting work with the Carlyle Group - a private equity firm approved by the league to pursue minority ownership in NFL teams.
The conflict of interest raised eyebrows, especially among players concerned about transparency and representation.
The pressure intensified following reports of a confidential agreement between the NFLPA and the league to suppress an arbitrator's ruling regarding potential collusion among NFL owners over quarterback contracts.
Further controversy erupted Thursday when it emerged that two player reps who supported Howell’s appointment were unaware he had been sued in 2011 for sexual discrimination and retaliation during his time at Booz Allen Hamilton.
"Our members deserve a union that will fight relentlessly for their health, safety, financial futures, and long-term well-being," he said, adding that he’ll continue to cheer for the players from the sidelines.
His resignation now leaves the NFLPA in search of new leadership at a critical moment, with the new season looming and key issues like player safety and compensation still front and center.
