Actor John Stamos of Full House fame has revealed that he was going to quit the show, as he hated it. Full House was telecast from 1987-1995 on the television channel ABC. A new series called Fuller House streamed on Netflix from 2016-2020.

Who was John Stamos on Full House and why did he want to quit?

John Stamos played the character of Uncle Jesse on Full House. In an interview with a YouTube talk show called Hot Ones, John Stamos remembered how he had called his agent from a pay phone and said to him, “Get me the (expletive) off this show!”

He wanted to quit. “I hated that show,” he revealed on the talk show. “Obviously, I ended up loving it (later).”

John Stamos went on to reveal that he wanted to quit Full House because he felt ‘upstaged’ by actor Jodie Sweetin in one of the first table reads of the show.

Stamos said that when he accepted the role of Uncle Jesse, he thought that the kids in Full House would be “background” characters. But he was in for a surprise when Sweetin’s character, Stephanie, got all the laughs.

“They couldn’t even hear my lines, they were laughing so hard at her,” said Stamos.

Stamos calmed down only when he realized that there was no main character on the show as such. “The central character was love,” said Stamos.

He said he “fought it” for a long time, then finally questioned himself. “It’s a beautiful show, filled with sweetness and kindness,” he reasoned.

Full House was about a single father Danny Tanner (Saget) who was raising his daughters D.J. (Candance Cameron), Stephanie (Jodie Sweetin) and Michelle (Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen), with the help of his brother-in-law Jesse Katsopolis (John Stamos) and best friend Joey Gladstone (Coulier).
