Former US President Donald Trump, during an appearance at the Detroit Economic Club, was asked about his parenting approach—a question that soon spiraled into an impassioned eight-minute discourse advocating for the death penalty for drug offenders.

The question, posed by businessman John Rakolta Jr., initially focused on how Trump raised his children to be "so responsible”, as mentioned in a report by The Independent.

However, Trump quickly shifted the conversation to a broader issue, outlining his belief that fentanyl-related crimes should carry the death penalty.

Trump’s Parenting Approach: ‘No Drugs, No Alcohol’

When asked about his family and how he instilled responsibility in his children, Trump began by attributing their success to their intelligence and a strict household rule.

“I have smart children... I would always tell them, no drugs, no alcohol,” he said. It was a brief moment on-topic before he shifted to a familiar theme—fentanyl.

Trump then recalled his previous efforts as president to combat the fentanyl crisis, stating that he “had that problem almost solved” with Chinese President Xi Jinping during his administration.

He emphasized that the majority of fentanyl enters the US through Mexico and praised China’s death penalty policy for drug dealers, which he claims could be a model for solving the crisis in the US.

Death Penalty Advocacy for Drug Crimes

This isn't the first time Trump has expressed support for capital punishment in drug-related cases. During his presidency, he frequently praised countries like China for their harsh penalties on drug traffickers.

He believes such a policy could have a profound impact on reducing the drug epidemic in the US, particularly with regard to fentanyl.

According to Trump, President Xi had agreed to implement the death penalty for fentanyl dealers, a move he saw as a major breakthrough.

“One of the very exciting things to come out of my meeting with President Xi of China is his promise to me to criminalize the sale of deadly fentanyl coming into the United States,” Trump said during the Detroit event, as quoted in a report by The Independent.

“Last year, over 77,000 people died from fentanyl. If China cracks down on this ‘horror drug,’ using the death penalty for distributors and pushers, the results will be incredible.”

Biden Blamed for Policy Failure

Trump went on to criticize his successor, President Joe Biden, for abandoning his plans, which he claims would have significantly curtailed the fentanyl crisis.

“And then we had the transfer of power, and this guy came in, and he didn’t know what to do with everything, so that went down the tubes,” Trump said, blaming Biden for the failure to continue his strict anti-drug policies.

Trump’s Controversial Call

Throughout his speech, Trump maintained that the death penalty for fentanyl-related offenses could help “solve a lot of the problem.”

He referenced conversations with President Xi about China’s drug-free society, attributing it to the country’s swift and harsh penalties. “First time I met President Xi, I said, ‘Do you have a drug problem?’

He said, ‘No, death penalty. Quick trial.’”
Trump ended his impassioned argument by calling on Americans to support this extreme measure. “Everybody in this room knows someone that lost a child to fentanyl,” Trump stated. “That wouldn’t have happened if we had the death penalty.”
