Netflix’s KPop Demon Hunters may be gaining momentum in the Oscars race, but it won’t see the same success at the BAFTAs. The animated feature, produced by Sony Pictures Animation and distributed by Netflix, has been deemed ineligible by the British Academy of Film and Television Arts, Variety reported.

Why BAFTA rejected the KPop Demon Hunters

Under BAFTA rules, all film entries must have a qualifying theatrical release in the UK While the academy can make exceptions under “exceptional circumstances” for titles released through other distribution models, such as event cinema, KPop Demon Hunters did not meet the bar, as per entertainment outlet.

Netflix formally appealed under this clause, arguing that the film’s event-style screenings, even though held two months after its Netflix debut, should count toward eligibility, the outlet notes. But BAFTA’s Film Committee disagreed, the outlet notes, ruling that the film failed to satisfy the minimum requirement of:

  • At least 10 commercial screenings in the UK

  • Across at least seven days in aggregate
The committee concluded that the film’s release pattern did not constitute a qualifying run.

What screenings KPop Demon Hunters actually have

Netflix initially released the film in 264 UK cinemas on Aug. 23 and 24, followed by a second wave of 528 theaters during Halloween weekend. Both were considered limited, event-style engagements and did not meet BAFTA’s required number of commercial screenings over multiple days.

The animated feature, however, cleared the bar for Academy Awards consideration. For Oscars eligibility, the film must screen for paid admission in at least one qualifying US metro area. KPop Demon Hunters fulfilled that requirement.

FAQs on KPop Demon Hunters

Why was KPop Demon Hunters ruled ineligible for the BAFTAs?
The film did not meet BAFTA’s mandatory requirement of at least 10 commercial UK screenings across seven aggregated days. Its event-style screenings, despite reaching hundreds of cinemas, were too short to qualify under BAFTA rules.

How did KPop Demon Hunters qualify for the Oscars but not the BAFTAs?

Oscar eligibility requires one qualifying theatrical run of at least seven days in select US metro areas. The film satisfied this by screening for a week in San Francisco, Los Angeles County, and New York City on the same day it debuted on Netflix. BAFTA, however, requires a sustained theatrical run in the UK, which the film did not achieve.
