An American Airlines flight operated by SkyWest Airlines was forced to make an emergency landing Monday night, October 20 in Omaha, Nebraska, after the pilots were unable to reach the flight attendants and heard someone outside the cockpit door, according to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).

Flight 6469, an Embraer ERJ 175 regional jet, departed Omaha’s Eppley Airfield at 6:41 p.m. local time en route to Los Angeles. However, the aircraft turned back shortly after takeoff, landing safely just 18 minutes later, according to flight-tracking data from FlightAware.

What happened inside American Airlines flight 6469

CNN quoted one passenger, who was traveling to Japan with his wife and 7-year-old daughter. “My wife noticed that the stewardess was kind of banging on the cockpit door, like, OK, what’s going on?” he said.

Passengers were not informed about the situation until police officers boarded the plane after landing. A photo shared from the scene showed the jet parked away from the terminal with two fire trucks positioned nearby, reports CNN.

Malfunction with the intercom

According to the FAA, the crew declared an emergency after being unable to communicate with the cabin crew. It was later determined that a malfunction in the aircraft’s interphone system caused the issue, leading the flight attendants to knock on the cockpit door to establish contact.

“After landing, it was determined there was a problem with the inter-phone system and the flight crew was knocking on the cockpit door.”

SkyWest Flight 6469 landed safely at around 7:45 p.m. local time. The flight was originally bound for Los Angeles International Airport (LAX). The airline has advised contacting SkyWest for further information.
