Who was the surprise guest at the DNC 2024? It turns out to be Covid-19; here's why

Democrats appear to have exasperated a small group of progressives by not enforcing stringent COVID-19 suppression measures for their convention.

Democrats gathered in Chicago last week for their first major live convention since 2016. The 2020 convention had to be held virtually due to the pandemic.

Perhaps at the Democratic National Convention, there was an unexpected guest. Following several convention attendees' positive COVID-19 respiratory illness tests last week in Chicago, health officials are worried about a spike in infections. People also disclosed their diagnoses on social media. Several online users who voiced concerns regarding the possible COVID-19 outbreak during the conference had social media profile pictures of themselves wearing masks.

The extent of the virus's spread during the four-day party event in Chicago last week is currently unknown. For the convention, tens of thousands of people gathered in the Windy City. The United Center, the location of the major speeches, can hold roughly 20,000 people, although a precise head count was not immediately available, as quoted in a report by The New York Post.

The pandemic did not allow the Democrats to have their 2020 convention in person, thus, this was their first large in-person convention since 2016. It was noticed that during celebrations some of the convention participants were masked, albeit only a few. But it contrasted sharply with the Republican National Convention held in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, where GOP attendees were still seething over face mask laws and other relevant preventions from the COVID-19 period.

Democrats did not mandate strict virus suppression measures for their convention, annoying progressives. The convention was held during a massive summer COVID surge, and many netizens complained about the spread. Despite lower testing levels, COVID-19 deaths have risen since June. The Food and Drug Administration approved new vaccines for Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna amidst the chaos.
