Didarul Islam, a 36-year-old officer with the New York City Police Department (NYPD), was fatally shot by gunman Shane Tamura at 345 Park Avenue in Midtown Manhattan on Monday evening, July 28. The shooting, which left four others dead and several injured, ended when the suspect reportedly turned the weapon on himself.

According to NYPD officials, Islam had been with the department for three and a half years and was assigned to the 47th Precinct. At the time of the attack, he was working off-duty as a security guard for Rudin Management Company but was in full uniform.

At a press conference, Police Commissioner Jessica S. Tisch described Islam as a man who “put himself in harm’s way” and was “shot in cold blood” while wearing “a uniform that stood for the promise he made to this city.” She added: “He died as he lived — a hero.”


Mayor Eric Adams also paid tribute, calling Officer Islam “a person of faith” and “a true blue New Yorker.” He joined other city leaders in honoring Islam’s dedication to protecting New Yorkers.

He was a Bangladeshi immigrant who was survived by his wife, who is eight months pregnant, according to police officials, and two children.

A statement shared by Queens Shomrim, a volunteer public safety organization, read:

“Queens Shomrim sends heartfelt condolences and support to the family, friends, and fellow officers of Officer Didarul Islam of the 47th Precinct. He made the ultimate sacrifice of keeping all of us safe while in the line of duty. We stand with the NYPD and the community during this difficult time.”

According to the Officer Down Memorial Page, Islam joined the NYPD in December 2021 and served for three and a half years.
