The search for a missing paddleboarder near the Obamas' residence in Martha's Vineyard took a tragic turn when a dead body was discovered in the water. The deceased individual was identified as the Obama family's longtime personal chef, Tafari Campbell, aged 45, from Virginia. Massachusetts police confirmed that Tafari Campbell had lost his life while paddleboarding on Edgartown Great Pond, a large coastal pool connected to the Atlantic Ocean, on Monday, July 24.

Who was Tafari Campbell and what happened to him?

Tafari Campbell had been the personal chef for Barack Obama and his family during their White House years. Even after Barack Obama left office in 2016, Campbell continued to serve as their personal chef. The Obamas fondly described Campbell as "a truly wonderful man." Meanwhile, his wife, Sherise Campbell, expressed her heartbreak over the tragic incident.

Campbell's name was well-known to aides, journalists, and others who had been associated with the Obama White House during the period from 2008 to 2016. As the longtime chef to America's 44th president, he had been featured in photos taken by the Associated Press and even appeared in a YouTube video posted by Obama's staff.

The tragedy involving Campbell:

Tafari Campbell's tragic incident unfolded on Sunday at around 7.40 pm (local time) when first responders were called to the Obama family's country estate on Martha's Vineyard. A witness reported a man drowning while paddleboarding near the property. The search operation involved Edgartown Fire, State Police patrols, Air Wing, and the Dukes County Sheriff's Department. Despite their efforts, Campbell went underwater and did not resurface. Search teams utilized dive teams, boat crews, and side-scan sonar technology, with aerial support from the US Coast Guard.

On Monday morning, the search was briefly paused to assess the next steps. However, at around 10 am, a body was discovered approximately 100 feet from shore, at a depth of about eight feet. The Massachusetts State Police later confirmed the body belonged to 45-year-old Tafari Campbell from Dumfries, Virginia. Campbell was a longtime employee of the Obamas, who were not present at the estate during the incident. While the cause of death has not been officially confirmed, a press release by the law enforcement agency suggested it was a "drowning."
