His iconic phrase, “Gary says get underground,” became a familiar and urgent call to action, credited with saving countless lives during the state’s fiercest tornadoes. Calm, composed, and deeply committed to public safety, England guided viewers through chaos with clarity and care.
“There will only ever be one Gary England,” colleagues and fans alike have said, an Oklahoman through and through, whose innovations in meteorology and unmatched dedication will be remembered.
Known to many as "Oklahoma’s Master Meteorologist," England spent over 40 years as chief meteorologist at KWTV-News 9 in Oklahoma City. He became a household name across the state for his steady voice and reliable forecasts during tornado seasons. His iconic phrase, “Gary says get underground,” became a lifesaving directive for many during Oklahoma’s frequent and violent storms.
Who was Gary England, the master Meteorologist?
Born in Seiling, Oklahoma, in 1939, England graduated from the University of Oklahoma and joined the US Navy before starting his television career. He joined KWTV in 1972 and served as its chief meteorologist until 2013.
He helped develop and was the first on-air broadcaster to use the now-commonplace “First Warning” storm alert system. He also worked closely with scientists and engineers to introduce Doppler radar to local TV broadcasting, giving viewers earlier and more accurate warnings about approaching tornadoes.
In addition to his on-air achievements, England received numerous awards throughout his career. He was inducted into the Oklahoma Hall of Fame in 2011 and received lifetime achievement honors from the National Weather Association and the Society of Professional Journalists.
England was also a mentor to younger meteorologists and a calming presence for generations of Oklahomans during times of crisis.
News 9 paid tribute to him, calling him “a legend, an innovator, and a protector of Oklahomans.” His colleagues remembered him not only for his professionalism but also for his kindness and deep dedication to public service.
