Felix Baumgartner, the Austrian extreme sports icon who stunned the world with his supersonic skydive from the edge of space in 2012, has died in a paragliding accident in Italy at the age of 56. According to multiple reports, Baumgartner lost control of his paramotor paraglider after feeling unwell and crashed into a hotel swimming pool near the coastal town of Fermo.

Emergency responders said he died instantly. Just hours before the accident, Baumgartner had shared photos and videos from his flight on social media, one of which was captioned: “Too much wind.”

How did he die?

Baumgartner was paragliding near the Italian coast when he reportedly began to feel unwell mid-flight. Witnesses say he appeared to lose control of the paramotor and plunged into the swimming pool of a resort.

He was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities are investigating the incident, but early reports suggest it was a tragic accident caused by a sudden health emergency.

A life at the edge

Baumgartner became a global sensation in October 2012 when he jumped from a helium balloon 39 kilometers (24 miles) above Earth, becoming the first person to break the sound barrier in free fall.

The jump, backed by Red Bull, was live-streamed to millions worldwide and earned him three Guinness World Records, including the highest freefall and manned balloon flight.

Known for his fearless stunts, Baumgartner was also an experienced BASE jumper and helicopter pilot. He gained a reputation as one of the boldest figures in extreme sports, often testing the boundaries of human capability.

Personal life

Baumgartner’s personal life occasionally drew controversy. In 2012, he was fined for battery after an altercation in Germany. In later years, he made headlines for his political remarks, including support for Hungary’s Prime Minister Viktor Orbán and criticism of refugee policies.

He once suggested in an interview that he believed a “moderate dictatorship” run by experienced professionals might be more effective than democracy, a statement that sparked debate in Austria.
