Dash Crofts, born Darrell George Crofts, the soft-spoken musician behind some of the most beloved 1970s hits, has died at the age of 85. His passing was confirmed by an agent for his daughter, Lua Crofts Faragher, who shared that “Lua, her family, and Brady Seals are mourning this deep loss," as per a report by ABC News.

Who was Dash Crofts and how did he rise to fame?


Crofts’ journey began in Cisco, Texas, where he was born in 1938 and developed a passion for music early in life. He mastered several instruments, including piano, guitar, drums and mandolin. As a teenager, he met Jim Seals, forming a friendship that would eventually shape their careers.

The two first played together in a local band before moving to Los Angeles in the late 1950s. There, they joined The Champs, known for the hit “Tequila,” and later performed with other groups, including one led by Glen Campbell.

By 1969, they officially became Seals & Crofts, releasing their debut album and beginning a journey that would soon take off, as per a report by ABC News and Boston.com.

The duo found widespread success in 1972 with the album “Summer Breeze,” which climbed to No. 7 on the Billboard 200. Its title track became a defining hit, reaching No. 6 and cementing their place in music history. Songs like “Hummingbird” also gained attention, further boosting their popularity.

Their momentum continued with “Diamond Girl” in 1973, another top-10 album. The title track again reached No. 6 on the Billboard Hot 100, as did “Get Closer” from their 1976 release. Other memorable songs included “We May Never Pass This Way Again” and “I’ll Play for You.”

Reflecting on their rise, Crofts once said, “That was the beginning of bigger concerts, bigger crowds and we kept getting hits in the Top 40. That cemented us in the music business.”

How is Dash Crofts being remembered today?


Crofts died Wednesday at the Heart Hospital of Austin after battling heart issues for several years. His daughter said he had been hospitalized for about a month before his passing, as per a report by ABC News and Boston.com.

Tributes quickly followed. Producer Louie Shelton, who worked on albums like “Summer Breeze” and “Diamond Girl,” shared, "Sad to hear our dear brother and partner in music has passed away today,” Shelton wrote Wednesday. “Sending love and prayers to all his family and many fans. R.I.P. my brother.....Dash Crofts."

Family members also honored his legacy, saying, “We are honoring and celebrating the amazing life and legacy of Darrell George 'Dash' Crofts, and are so grateful for the music that lives on through Seals & Crofts 2."

Crofts is survived by his second wife, Louise, his children Lua, Faizi and Amelia, and eight grandchildren.

From humble beginnings in Texas to global recognition, Dash Crofts helped define a softer side of rock music. His songs, carried by gentle melodies and heartfelt lyrics, continue to echo long after his passing.
