Who is Zubayar Al-Bakoush? Why the US took him into custody, where he’s from, and what he is accused of
More than 12 years after the deadly assault on the U.S. diplomatic compound in Benghazi, American authorities say a key suspect is finally in custody. The arrest marks a significant moment in a case that killed four Americans and reshaped U.S. politics for years. Federal prosecutors say justice efforts never stopped.

Who is the suspect arrested in the Benghazi attack case?

Federal officials identified the suspect as Zubayar Al-Bakoush, an alleged member of an extremist militia in Libya who had been sought by the United States for more than a decade. Prosecutors say he was a key participant in the coordinated attack on the U.S. compound in Benghazi.

According to a newly unsealed indictment, Al-Bakoush joined an armed mob that breached the compound’s gates and set buildings on fire during a 13-hour assault. The attack occurred on the night of September 11, 2012, and left four Americans dead.

How was Al-Bakoush brought to the United States?

The Justice Department and FBI did not provide details about how or where Al-Bakoush was captured. Officials confirmed only that he was transported to an airfield in Virginia early Friday and will be prosecuted in Washington, D.C.

He faces multiple charges, including murder, attempted murder, arson, and conspiracy to provide material support to a foreign terrorism organization. Authorities said it was unclear whether he has legal representation or when his first court appearance will take place.

Why does the Benghazi attack still matter today?

The Benghazi assault became one of the most divisive political issues of the past decade. Republicans repeatedly questioned the Obama administration and then-Secretary of State Hillary Clinton over security at the facility, the military response, and shifting explanations about the attack.

A Republican-led congressional investigation later faulted the administration for security shortcomings and a slow response but found no wrongdoing by Clinton. Clinton dismissed the findings as repetitive, saying it was “time to move on,” while Democrats criticized the report as “a conspiracy theory on steroids.”

What happened during the 2012 Benghazi attack?

U.S. officials have said at least 20 militants armed with AK-47s and grenade launchers stormed the Benghazi compound and set multiple buildings ablaze. Ambassador Chris Stevens and State Department employee Sean Smith died from smoke inhalation caused by the fires.

Other personnel escaped to a nearby annex, which later came under a separate attack. A precision mortar barrage struck the annex, killing security officers Tyrone Woods and Glen Doherty.

What have officials said about the latest arrest?

Attorney General Pam Bondi announced the arrest alongside FBI Director Kash Patel and U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro. “We have never stopped seeking justice for that crime against our nation,” Bondi said.

The arrest follows earlier prosecutions, including the 2014 capture and conviction of suspected mastermind Ahmed Abu Khattala, whose defense argued the evidence against him was inconclusive.
